Maxim Sod Kicker 12-Inch Manual Sod Cutter — GWG311001
Remove unwanted sod without the fuel, maintenance, or engine noise of a powered sod cutter. The Maxim Sod Kicker uses a sharp 12-inch blade and a simple kicking-and-pushing motion to cut beneath the turf’s root layer.
This manually operated sod cutter is ideal for creating new garden beds, removing sections of lawn, preparing walkways and patios, and cutting shallow paths for invisible pet fencing. Its compact 30-pound design provides better control in areas where a large powered machine would be difficult to maneuver.
Why Choose the Maxim Sod Kicker?
- Cuts a 12-inch-wide strip of sod
- Requires no gasoline, oil, batteries, or electricity
- Produces no engine noise or exhaust
- Cuts beneath grass and its upper root layer
- Provides controlled cutting around landscaping features
- Compact 30-pound design is easy to transport and store
- Durable wooden handles provide leverage and control
- Optional bed-shaping and edging blade is available separately
- Made in the USA with U.S. and imported components
Ideal Applications
The Maxim Sod Kicker is well suited for targeted residential landscaping projects, including:
- Creating new gardens and flower beds
- Removing strips or sections of lawn
- Preparing areas for patios and walkways
- Cutting paths for landscape borders
- Creating shallow trenches for invisible pet fencing
- Removing damaged sod for replacement
- Cutting reusable sections of healthy turf
How It Works
Position the blade at the beginning of your marked cutting line. Push the blade into the soil using the handles and kick bar until it reaches beneath the turf’s upper root layer.
Lower the handles to bring the blade approximately parallel with the ground. Continue moving forward with a controlled kicking motion while keeping the blade underneath the sod. At the end of the row, lift the cutter to finish the cut and roll the loosened sod for removal or reuse.
Preparing the Lawn
Proper preparation makes manual sod cutting considerably easier:
- Mow the grass to approximately 1 inch.
- Lightly water or sprinkle the lawn to soften the soil.
- Avoid soaking the ground—it should still feel firm when walked on.
- Mark straight cutting lines with landscape paint, stakes, or string.
- Remove rocks, sticks, and other debris from the cutting path.
- Locate buried utilities, irrigation lines, sprinkler heads, and valves before cutting.
For easier handling, the manufacturer recommends cutting sod into sections approximately 6 to 8 feet long before rolling and moving it.

The blade is sharp and the area around the roller contains pinch points. Wear work gloves and hard-soled shoes or boots during assembly and operation.
Never operate the sod cutter near unidentified underground electrical lines, gas lines, irrigation pipes, sprinkler heads, or valves. Clear the cutting path before beginning and use proper lifting techniques when rolling and moving sod.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this sod cutter require gas or electricity?
No. The Maxim Sod Kicker is completely manually operated and requires no gas, oil, batteries, or electrical connection.
How wide is the cut?
The included sod-cutting blade creates an approximately 12-inch-wide cut.
Does it cut through roots?
It is designed to cut beneath grass and through the turf’s upper root layer. It is not intended to cut through large woody roots, rocks, buried metal, or other hard obstructions.
Is the cutting depth adjustable?
Cutting depth is controlled by how deeply the blade is initially inserted and the angle at which the handles are held. Once the blade is beneath the desired root layer, the handles are lowered to keep the blade approximately parallel with the lawn.
Does using it require physical effort?
Yes. This is a manual tool that moves through the lawn using a kicking-and-pushing motion. Moist, workable soil and proper lawn preparation will significantly reduce the effort required.
Should the lawn be watered before cutting?
Dry or hard soil should be lightly watered before use. The soil should be soft enough to work but not muddy or saturated.
Is the edging blade included?
No. The bed-shaping and edging blade is an optional accessory sold separately.
Is assembly required?
Yes. The sod-cutting blade and wooden handles must be attached to the frame using the included hardware. Consult the owner’s manual before assembly and operation.
