How It Works

Position the blade at the beginning of your marked cutting line. Push the blade into the soil using the handles and kick bar until it reaches beneath the turf’s upper root layer.

Lower the handles to bring the blade approximately parallel with the ground. Continue moving forward with a controlled kicking motion while keeping the blade underneath the sod. At the end of the row, lift the cutter to finish the cut and roll the loosened sod for removal or reuse.

Preparing the Lawn

Proper preparation makes manual sod cutting considerably easier:

1. Mow the grass to approximately 1 inch.
2. Lightly water or sprinkle the lawn to soften the soil.
3. Avoid soaking the ground—it should still feel firm when walked on.
4. Mark straight cutting lines with landscape paint, stakes, or string.
5. Remove rocks, sticks, and other debris from the cutting path.
6. Locate buried utilities, irrigation lines, sprinkler heads, and valves before cutting.

For easier handling, the manufacturer recommends cutting sod into sections approximately 6 to 8 feet long before rolling and moving it.
